Every town, historical building, battle site and memorial has a tale to tell, an event to commemorate, a memory to recall.

Colenso, on the banks of the Tugela River, is surrounded by the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains. Originally known as Commando Drift, it was renamed in honour of John William Colenso, the first Bishop of KwaZulu Natal. On 15 December 1899, General Buller’s first attempt to relieve the besieged town of Ladysmith met with disaster at the Battle of Colenso. Get yourself some Zulu art clay flower pots & wooden trays .

Estcourt, originally called Bushmans River, was renamed Estcourt after the MP for North Wiltshire, who sponsored British settlers under the Byrne immigration scheme. This picturesque town is at the start of the Battlefields Route.

Ladysmith in Kwazulu Natal, a well-established village by 1849, was proclaimed a town in 1850. Named after the Spanish wife of Sir Harry Smith, the town prospered after the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand and diamonds in Kimberley, as it became an important stopover. During the South African War (1899-1902), it was besieged by Boer forces. The news spread around the world, and its name entered military history. Durban beach holiday

Weenen (the place of weeping) was laid out in 1838 on the banks of the Bushmans River and named in memory of the massacre of Voortrekkers by Zulus.
