What You Can Expect To See In KwaZulu Natal Mhlathuze Municipality

The name Mhlathuze in KwaZulu Natal Province in South Africa is derived from that of the river that meanders through the municipal area.

According to legend the uMhlathuze river was strong in current but was infested with crocodiles: Mhlati –jaw, Mthuzu – does not chew. In other words, the uMhlathuze river was like a jaw that could not chew.

Richards Bay

Richards Bay Game Reserve – set up to protect lagoon animals formerly subject to intensive slaughtering, it features a prodigious number of birds and animals including hippos and crocodiles; Enseleni Game Reserve – a 295 ha reserve, whose name is isiZulu for ‘lair of the badger’ – mangroves, papyrus and many antelope species are some of the attractions; Lake Mzingazi; Reptile City; Tuzi Gazi Waterfront; safe beaches; Zulu cultural experiences; watersports; golf course. Museums and art galleries

The bustling town of Richards Bay began as a makeshift harbour set up by a Commodore of the Cape, Rear Admiral Sir Frederick Richards, during the South African War of 1879.

Long before, the local populace knew the area as Echwenbeni.

A settlement sprang up around the port, now named after Richards. In 1828 a hotel and store were built. In 1906 Zululand Fisheries was founded and the first ox-wagon track to Empangeni was pioneered. Durban beach holiday

In February 1996 Richards Bay amalgamated with the neighbouring towns of Esikhawini, Enseleni and Vulindlela Empangeni is important to the Zulus, as this area was inhabited by the Nguni tribe and the Mthethwa. In 1851, the Norwegian Missionary Society established a station on the banks of the Mpangeni River.

The river was named after the profusion of mpange trees growing along its banks, and the settlement that formed around the station took the slightlyAnglicised name of the river.
