Nquthu, derived from the Zulu word “isingquthu”, meaning ‘flat-topped vessel’, and referring to the hill overlooking the village, was a small trading centre in 1879.
History of Enquthu Kwazulu Natal
Nquthu Municipality was established in December 2001. It includes eight tribal areas; and most of the land in the municipality, with the exception of state owned land in Nquthu town and Nondweni, is still under tribal administration.

In January of that year, a British army column under the command of Lord Chelmsford was attacked and routed by a 20 000 strong Zulu impi at the Battle of Isandlwana, not far from Nquthu.

Nquthu Municipality is linked to the surrounding towns of Dundee, Melmoth, Vryheid and Newcastle. Dundee is linked to Nquthu by tarred road and provides many of the administrative and institutional needs, as well as serving as the commercial centre for higher-order, wholesaling and light industrial activities and providing many employment opportunities for Nquthu residents, particularly those in the southern portion of the municipality.
Nquthu Municipality is predominantly rural, with almost 93% of the population of 145 034 classified as such.
The largest urban centre is Nquthu town. As well as serving a large surrounding rural population, it fulfils the role of provincial administration centre. Nondweni, the only other town of note, was established as a resettlement town during the apartheid era.
