What is clan
The formation of a Zulu clan comes from the Nguni people. Nguni people are different; language, culture, lifestyle and beliefs, bur they all belong under the Zulu clan. That's the reason why it is quoted that Shaka recruited Nguni people to his empire and named them the Zulu clan.
In Zulu culture today, we say you belong to a certain Zulu clan, because of our surnames. For example if one says he is Dlamini, we know that he is from the clan of the Nkosi. This is taken from olden days when every clan used to have a leader and Zulu people will be known by the clan's name.
