Zululand Municipality is named after the inhabitants of the area, The Zulus ‘Zulu’ means ‘heaven’ in isiZulu.
Zululand District Municipality was established in 1996 after the first democratic Local Government elections. Within its five local municipalities live about 804 000 people.
Zululand is primarily a rural district, with just two major towns: Vryheid is the commercial centre and Ulundi the administrative centre. Both are well located in relation to national road and rail networks.
Most of the rural settlements are small, making service delivery costly. About half the area falls under the jurisdiction of Traditional Authorities, the remainder being privately owned commercial farms, protected areas, or privately owned land in towns.
The district experiences high levels of poverty and the dependence of communities on government programmes is increasing. It has been selected as one of the focus areas for the national government’s Integrated Sustainable Rural Development Strategy (ISRDS).
Tourism has potential to bring economic benefits: areas that can be developed include eMakhosini-Opathe (to be called eMakhosini Heritage Park), cultural and historical sites at Ulundi, and the Paris Dam and Ithala area linking to the Maputaland biosphere and Magudu Game Reserve. There are battlefield sites around Vryheid and Babanango, which extend beyond the district.
